As we gather to celebrate the 4th of July and reflect on its historic and liberating significance, it is disheartening to witness the far left’s relentless efforts to cancel and discredit this important day. Their attacks seem ceaseless.
Some of their tactics are overt and obvious. Calling for the cancellation of Independence Day celebrations and the removal of our Founding Fathers’ names from institutions of learning. Desecrating their statues and transforming historical homes into platforms for “wokeness.” Disparaging our founders as “White supremacists.” Fireworks explode over the National Mall in Washington, D.C., on July 4, 2017 (Paul J. However, there is a growing number of covert assaults taking place as well. Recently, The Carolina Journal shed light on one such attack happening behind the scenes at the University of North Carolina. University officials and their government affairs team are actively working to block the Reach Act, a proposed legislation that would mandate a three-credit course in American government, the U.S. Constitution, and other foundational American documents for all North Carolina public college students. This includes important texts like the Declaration of Independence and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Letter from Birmingham Jail. Who could possibly be against such a crucial educational initiative? Well, besides the UNC officials mentioned earlier, it seems that 700 liberal professors from the school and counting have expressed their opposition. Former Vice President Mike Pence, to his credit, strongly defended the Reach Act during his speech at UNC. Unfortunately, his message was not widely heard beyond the confines of that hall.
This lack of widespread awareness is due, in large part, to the left’s control over what I refer to as the “five major megaphones” in our society: the media, academia, entertainment, science, and medicine. They have not only seized control of the narrative but have also demonstrated a willingness to silence anyone who doesn’t align with their far-left agenda. This includes former vice presidents advocating for the teaching of our founding documents.
What is happening at UNC is now spreading not only throughout our colleges and universities, which are predominantly liberal and socialist leaning, but also infiltrating our high schools and middle schools. It’s alarming.
Last year, I authored a book titled “The 56: Liberty Lessons from those who risked all to sign The Declaration of Independence.” The purpose of this book was to warn of the insidious cancellation process being orchestrated by activists and anarchists from the left, while also outlining actionable steps to defend our shared American history, which is often sacred to many of us. We must not underestimate the far left’s victories.
With each passing month, they gain ground in their mission to tarnish the reputation of our Founding Fathers and erase the historical record of their brilliance, bravery, and sacrifices as they came together to establish the greatest nation in the world. Only weeks ago, the far-left mayor of Albany, New York successfully removed the statue of Maj. Gen. Philip Schuyler from in front of City Hall. Schuyler served as a heroic commander during the Revolutionary War, was a member of the Continental Congress, a U.S. senator, and the father-in-law of Alexander Hamilton. None of this mattered to the left. To them, he was simply a “White supremacist” who needed to be erased. We may be losing, but all hope is not lost.
Around 1772, our Founding Fathers initiated “Committees of Correspondence” to disseminate information about the tyranny of the British crown. Handwritten letters traveled from town to town, county to county, and colony to colony. They understood something that we must never forget: unless those who seek to impose totalitarianism imprison us or take our lives, they cannot silence our voices. They cannot silence us.
Whether it’s through conversations with neighbors, colleagues, fellow worshippers, or via social media, let us spread this simple message: our founding documents represent the enduring framework for true liberty. (iStock)
“If our history holds flaws, let us condemn and learn from them. If it holds greatness, let us celebrate and build upon it. But let us never cancel our shared American past.”
The 4th of July stands as the most revered day and holiday in the history of our nation. Our Founding Fathers, flawed as they were, were courageous heroes. Our founding documents serve as the timeless blueprints for genuine liberty.
Long live the 4th of July and the memories of the men who bestowed upon us this extraordinary day. Let’s share this message before it is too late.
