The silence of Virgin Media and BT on ‘social tariffs’ for broadband: What’s the reason? | Money

Did you know that both Virgin Media and BT offer cost-effective broadband packages to families receiving benefits, including universal credit? It’s worth mentioning this because these offers are not widely promoted by the companies themselves.

I have been assisting a Ukrainian refugee family who have recently found a home in the UK. However, with their low income, broadband costs are disproportionately high for them. So, I reached out to Virgin Media to inquire about any more affordable alternatives to their existing £28-a-month deal.

The adviser offered a package for £27 and stated that it was the lowest price available. Unfortunately, this was still too high for us, so we declined. However, later a friend sent me a link to the Virgin website, where they were offering a package for £12 specifically for families receiving benefits like universal credit.

I was truly surprised that the person we spoke to did not mention this offer, and I couldn’t find it advertised on their website either. It seems that many eligible families might be missing out on this opportunity.

In this era of rising prices for broadband and mobile contracts, “social tariffs” have never been more crucial for consumers.

BT, Virgin, Vodafone, and Sky offer phone lines and basic broadband for £12 a month to both new and existing customers receiving certain benefits. TalkTalk also provides its own discount deal.

Phone companies should do more to promote these tariffs. If you know someone who has lost their job or is on benefits, remind them about these special offers. You can find a comprehensive list on the MoneySavingExpert website.
