Disciplinary Action Taken Against Four LAPD Bomb Squad Members Involved in June 2021 Explosion

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore has made an announcement regarding the discipline of four members of the department’s bomb squad for their involvement in a failed detonation of illegal fireworks in a South Los Angeles neighborhood two years ago.

Furthermore, an internal investigation conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department has led to the implementation of new protocols for the bomb squad to prevent any similar incidents in the future, as stated by Moore.

The controlled detonation that took place on June 30, 2021, on East 27th Street near San Pedro Street resulted in the hospitalization of 17 residents and first responders. It also caused the destruction of a bomb squad truck and damaged 22 residences, 13 businesses, and 37 vehicles.

“Immediate efforts were made to stabilize and repair 27th Street following the fireworks disposal explosion in 2021,” said Moore in a statement on Saturday. “While we were working on restoring the community, we also conducted a comprehensive internal review and made significant corrections. A thorough investigation was conducted, examining the actions of the personnel present at the scene that day, and a detailed review of the practices and protocols of the Bomb Squad was carried out. As a result of this investigation, four Bomb Squad members faced disciplinary action for their involvement in this incident. Additionally, new protocols have been put in place to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of both community members and officers.”

“Even though we cannot undo the damage caused by this event, we, as a Department, remain dedicated to supporting the affected residents as we continue our efforts to make amends,” Moore added.

The chief mentioned that the commanding officers of the Newton station within the department meet weekly with the 27th Street Long-Term Recovery Group as part of this ongoing effort.

In 2022, the Department of Housing reported that 23 individuals from six households had been successfully relocated to permanent housing. Additionally, eight households were prepared to relocate and were actively searching for affordable housing options. The city has invested over $3 million in supporting and assisting the residents affected by the explosion.
