In one of the largest hotel work stoppages in the history of greater Los Angeles, thousands of hotel workers went on strike on Sunday. Their demands revolve around pay and staffing issues, causing strain on hotels during the Fourth of July weekend and a major convention. The strike impacts various hotels in Southern California and involves multiple job positions.

One of the core concerns behind the strike is compensation. Rising living costs, particularly housing, are forcing hotel workers to commute long distances to their workplaces. The union representing the hospitality employees, Unite Here Local 11, states that the hotel industry received bailouts while workers faced cuts. Negotiations have been delayed by hotel negotiators taking a four-day holiday.

The strike comes after the Westin Bonaventure, the largest hotel in L.A., reached a tentative agreement just before contracts expired. Apart from wage increases, the union is seeking guaranteed staffing levels, automatic digital tipping, and the continuation of strong health insurance and pension programs. Hotels such as JW Marriott, Millennium Biltmore, Fairmont Miramar, and Sheraton Universal have not yet reached a deal, according to a union spokesperson.
