Unforgettable Game: Pitcher Delivers a Performance for the Ages

Domingo German, the right-handed pitcher for the New York Yankees, achieved perfection in his game against the Oakland Athletics. On Wednesday night, German pitched the 24th perfect game in major league history, retiring every Oakland batter in an 11-0 victory. This feat marks the first perfect game since Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners accomplished it against the Tampa Bay Rays back in 2012. German now joins the exclusive group of Yankees pitchers who have thrown perfect games: Don Larsen (1956), David Wells (1998), and David Cone (1999). With this achievement, the Yankees become the first franchise with four perfect games, with Larsen’s gem famously occurring in Game 5 of the 1956 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers.

“It’s such an exciting moment,” German expressed through a translator. “Pitching a perfect game is an incredibly unique accomplishment in baseball. To have this experience in my career is something that I will cherish forever.” After struggling in his previous two starts, German displayed his dominance on the mound, striking out nine of the 27 Athletics players. The A’s, who currently hold the worst record in the league at 21-61, were no match for German’s skills. This outstanding performance comes after German served a 10-game suspension for using an illegal substance on the mound during a game in Toronto. Prior to this, his only complete game as a professional pitcher came in April 2017 with Double-A Trenton.

Having previously been winless in six outings against Oakland, German delivered an impressive performance, throwing 72 strikes out of his 99 pitches. He effectively utilized a mix of 51 curveballs, 30 fastballs averaging 92.5mph, 17 change-ups, and one sinker. German faced a three-ball count on a batter only twice throughout the entire game, momentarily falling behind Ryan Noda and Jonah Bride but quickly recovering. Seth Brown came closest to reaching base for the A’s with a sharp ground hit in the fifth inning, but was outed by Anthony Rizzo’s diving stop and throw to German at first base.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone expressed his excitement, stating, “It was so fun to watch German’s performance and watch him work his magic on the mound. We’ve seen glimpses of this potential in his previous outings.” Boone recalled a recent game where Boston’s Alex Verdugo broke up German’s no-hit bid in the eighth inning. He added, “When German gets in a groove like this, it’s a joy to witness his mastery of pitching and his command over all his pitches.” For German, this achievement marks a remarkable personal turnaround. Despite his successful 2019 season with an 18-4 record, he faced setbacks when he was put on administrative leave due to allegations of domestic violence. He missed the entire 2020 season and playoffs due to an 81-game suspension. However, he returned to the Yankees in February 2021, made amends with his teammates, and publicly apologized during spring training.
