In a rare move of retribution, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives has officially censured Rep. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from Burbank, for his prominent role in the first impeachment of former President Donald Trump.
The House resolution, which passed along party lines, accuses Schiff of “misleading the American public” during a congressional investigation into alleged ties between Russia and Trump’s presidential campaign, as well as his involvement in the impeachment proceedings.
Defending himself on the House floor, Schiff not only took pride in earning the Republicans’ ire but also dismissed the censure resolution as a “sham.”
“Your enmity is an honor, and your falsehood is flattering,” Schiff retorted. “You, the authors of the ‘Big Lie’ about the last election, must condemn truth-tellers like me. I stand proudly before you, for your words are evidence of my effectiveness in defending our democracy, and for that, I am grateful.”
Schiff further criticized Republicans, arguing that they should be the ones facing censure for spreading false claims about the previous presidential election. He questioned why they did not stand up to Donald Trump and lacked the courage to confront the most immoral, unlawful, and unethical president in history.
Once the resolution passed, House Democrats collectively chanted “Shame” multiple times.
The censure resolution was introduced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, who rejected claims that it was a partisan act. Instead, she framed it as a clear vote between right and wrong. While Luna initially introduced the resolution last week without success, the revised version presented on Wednesday featured significant changes, including the removal of a proposed $16 million fine.
It is worth noting that Schiff is now a candidate for the U.S. Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Dianne Feinstein.
