Romanian Authorities Indict Influencer Andrew Tate on Human Trafficking Charges

Online influencer Andrew Tate, along with his brother and two Romanian women, have been charged with human trafficking and rape in Romania, according to prosecutors. This indictment comes six months after they were initially detained.

The anti-organised crime prosecution’s unit (DIICOT) has formally indicted the four defendants for crimes including setting up an organized criminal group, trafficking in persons, and rape.

Andrew Tate, 36, his brother Tristan, 34, and two Romanian women were arrested by Romanian police late last year. They were initially placed under preventive detention and later placed under house arrest at the end of March.

British-US influencer Andrew Tate (2nd L) and his brother Tristan Tate (R) arrive handcuffed and escorted by police at a courthouse in Bucharest on February 1, 2023 to hear the court decision on their appeal against pre-trial detention for alleged human trafficking, rape and forming a criminal group. Former kickboxer Tate, his younger brother and two Romanian women are under investigation for allegedly “forming an organised criminal group, human trafficking and rape”. They are accused of coercing women into “forced labour… and pornographic acts” for “substantial financial benefits”. All four were arrested at the end of December (Photo by Daniel MIHAILESCU / AFP)

The accused individuals deny all allegations made against them.

“It has been determined that in early 2021, the four defendants formed an organized criminal group with the intent of committing human trafficking in Romania, as well as in other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom,” stated DIICOT.

In addition to the charges of human trafficking and rape, the four defendants are also charged with illegal access to a computer system, altering the integrity of computer data, instigation to assault or other violence, and assault or other violence.

According to DIICOT, the Tate brothers and their accomplices allegedly trafficked, recruited, and exploited women through coercion into engaging in pornographic acts for the purpose of producing and disseminating such material online.

Throughout the investigation, Romanian police conducted raids on several properties connected to the Tate brothers and seized assets, including a collection of luxury cars.

Andrew Tate, a dual citizen of the United States and Britain, moved to Romania years ago after starting a webcam business in the UK.

In 2016, Tate appeared on the “Big Brother” reality television show in Britain but was removed after a video surfaced of him attacking a woman.

Since then, he has turned to social media platforms to promote his divisive views. He currently has 6.9 million followers on Twitter.
