Live Stream: NASA Astronauts Perform Spacewalk to Install Solar Array on ISS

NASA astronaut Woody Hoburg, along with astronaut Stephen Bowen, embarked on a spacewalk on Thursday with the goal of installing a new solar array on the International Space Station. This solar array is designed to increase the station’s power capacity and was being installed on the starboard truss segment of the space station, opposite to where another solar array was installed last week.

Beginning at approximately 8:55 a.m., the astronauts carefully positioned the solar array with guidance from NASA engineers on Earth. They passed the array back and forth as they moved across the space station, ensuring its proper installation. This spacewalk marked Bowen’s 10th, setting a new record for the most spacewalks by a U.S. astronaut, while it was Hoburg’s second spacewalk.

Prior to the mission, the two astronauts, in collaboration with flight engineers Frank Rubio and Sultan Alneyadi, participated in robotics training. This training focused on Canadarm2 robotic arm maneuvers necessary for the installation of the solar array. Additionally, Bowen and Hoburg prepared their tools inside the Quest airlock, printed checklists to attach to their spacesuit cuffs, and reviewed spacewalk procedures on a computer.

In addition to Bowen and Hoburg’s spacewalk, Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin are preparing for a separate spacewalk on June 22. During this time, they will remove and replace communication and science hardware, as well as document the condition of the Zvezda service module. This will be Prokopyev’s fifth spacewalk and Petelin’s third.

Throughout this year, there have been numerous spacewalks conducted by astronauts and cosmonauts at the International Space Station. In fact, there have been over 260 spacewalks in total since the station was first assembled.
