Two individuals who entered a plea of no contest in a hate crime assault on two Jewish men outside a restaurant in the Beverly Grove area have been ordered by Superior Court Judge Laura Priver to complete 80 hours of counseling focused on bias and cultural sensitivity. In addition, they are required to participate in an eight-hour program at the Museum of Tolerance. Judge Priver also sentenced Samer Jayylusi, aged 37, and Xavier Pabon, aged 32, to two years of probation.
The judge stated, “The court does not condone or approve of this type of behavior. The court would like to dissuade them from this type of behavior.”
Judge Priver believed that the counseling and Museum of Tolerance program would be a more constructive resolution compared to the state prison sentence requested by the prosecution.
On May 22, Jayylusi and Pabon pleaded no contest to two counts each of assault likely to produce great bodily injury and admitted to a hate crime allegation for each count.
The allegations state that the two individuals approached and attacked the two victims based on their religion outside a restaurant on May 18, 2021. This statement was released by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office in September 2021 following the charges.
Cell phone footage captured the moment a group of men exited a vehicle and assaulted the diners while shouting racial slurs. The police reported one minor injury.
The two defendants were allegedly part of a caravan that waved Palestinian flags on North La Cienega Boulevard on May 18, following a large protest supporting Palestinian rights amidst the conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Then-Mayor Eric Garcetti referred to the incident as an “organized, anti-Semitic attack.” Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore stated that the attack “seemed to originate from a group of vehicles carrying flags within Jewish-populated areas such as Hollywood, West L.A., Mid-Wilshire, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills.”
Jayylusi and Pabon were arrested within a week of the incident and subsequently released on bond.
