Tijuana Mayor Relocating to Army Base for Enhanced Security

The mayor of Tijuana, a Mexican border city, has made the decision to live at an army base for her own safety after receiving threats. Mayor Montserrat Caballero confirmed this decision after the police discovered seven dead bodies inside a pickup truck at a gas station in Tijuana. The doors of the truck were open, and a body wrapped in a blanket was found on the back seat of the cab. Six more bodies were hidden under tires and wooden boards. Caballero stated, “I have received threats, so I am going to live at the base.” The army base, located on the southern edge of Tijuana, is approximately 5 miles away from the city hall.

Although Caballero did not disclose who the threats came from, the Tijuana city government released a statement revealing that the threats were linked to her administration’s successful efforts in seizing weapons and arresting violent suspects. It is well-known that various drug cartels are engaged in turf battles in Tijuana, which is located across the border from San Diego, California. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador stated that the threats were made by organized crime groups, a term commonly used in Mexico to refer to drug cartels. López Obrador also mentioned that the governor of the border state of Baja California, a former governor, and the mayor had all received similar threats simultaneously. The decision to relocate the mayor to the army base was made approximately two weeks ago for her protection, but no further details were provided regarding the threats. (Read more Mexico stories.)
