Female, 28, Accused of Pretending to be a Louisiana High School Student

Martha Jessenia Gutierrez Serrano, a 28-year-old woman, and her mother, Marta Elizabeth Serrano Alvarado, 46, were arrested on Tuesday in Hahnville, Louisiana. They were charged with injuring public records after it was discovered that Gutierrez Serrano had enrolled in Hahnville High School using fake documents to pose as a 17-year-old student.

According to Sheriff Greg Champagne, Gutierrez Serrano claimed that she enrolled in school to learn English and become proficient in the language. However, her actions of falsifying government documents were deemed as “bad judgment” by the sheriff. He suggested that there were alternative options available, such as enrolling in ESL or GED programs.

The investigation into Gutierrez Serrano’s true identity and age began after a tip was received by the St. Charles Parish School System. It was suspected that the supposed 17-year-old student may actually be in her mid-20s. The internal investigation commenced four days after the school year ended on May 25.

At this time, there is no evidence of any other criminal activity or inappropriate conduct by either woman. The St. Charles Parish School System stated that they will enhance their processes to ensure the authenticity of enrollment documents for future students.

It is important to note that this incident is not an isolated case. Earlier this year, a 29-year-old woman was charged with using false documents to enroll in a high school in New Jersey. She attended classes for four days before being apprehended. In May, she was permitted to enter a pretrial intervention program.

While this case raises concerns about school safety and document authentication, it is essential to wait for further updates as the investigation is ongoing.
