In England, the long waiting list for NHS treatment has grown to over 7 million people. This has led to a significant increase in the number of individuals opting for private operations and treatments, with a rise of more than a third since the start of the pandemic.
Research conducted by the Private Healthcare Information Network (PHIN), an organization that provides data on private consultants and hospitals, suggests that the current cost of living crisis is a driving factor behind the shift away from private health insurance.
In 2022, the number of individuals receiving treatment through private health insurance was just under 550,000, which is 30,000 lower compared to three years ago. On the other hand, the number of people using their own funds to pay for treatments, such as knee or eye surgery, has increased to 272,000 from 199,000 in 2019.
When it comes to choosing between private healthcare options, it can be challenging to determine which is the best choice. Are you sticking with your current health insurance plan or finding it too expensive? Do you feel that fewer medical complaints are covered? If you have decided to self-pay, how are you financing the costs? Would you be willing to consider taking out a loan?
