In a verdict that aims to promote cultural sensitivity and combat bias, two men who pleaded no contest to a hate crime attack on two Jewish individuals outside a restaurant in the Beverly Grove area have been ordered by Superior Court Judge Laura Priver to complete 80 hours of counseling focused on bias and cultural sensitivity. Additionally, they are required to attend an eight-hour program at the Museum of Tolerance. To ensure accountability, Samer Jayylusi, 37, and Xavier Pabon, 32, will serve two years of probation.
Judge Priver expressed her disapproval of such behavior, stating that the court firmly opposes it. However, instead of sending the offenders to state prison, she believes that the counseling and Museum of Tolerance program offer a more constructive solution.
On May 22, Jayylusi and Pabon entered a plea of no contest for two counts each of assault likely to cause significant bodily harm, along with admitting to a hate crime allegation for each count. Deputy District Attorney Paul Kim provided this information.
The incident took place on May 18, 2021, when the defendants allegedly approached two men outside a restaurant and targeted them based on their religion. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office released a statement in September 2021 regarding the charges.
Cell phone footage captured the moment a group of men exited a vehicle and attacked the diners, hurling racial slurs. One minor injury was reported by the police.
According to authorities, Jayylusi and Pabon were part of a caravan displaying Palestinian flags in the 300 block of North La Cienega Boulevard. This occurred shortly after a large protest supporting Palestinian rights and amidst the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.
Former Mayor Eric Garcetti characterized the incident as an “organized, anti-Semitic attack.” Police Chief Michel Moore confirmed that the attack originated from a group of vehicles displaying flags in Jewish-populated areas such as Hollywood, West L.A., Mid-Wilshire, West Hollywood, and Beverly Hills.
Jayylusi and Pabon were arrested within a week but were subsequently released on bond.
