86-year-old former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi hospitalized for medical examinations

Silvio Berlusconi, the former prime minister of Italy, aged 86, has been admitted to Milan’s San Raffaele hospital for medical checks. This comes two months after he was diagnosed with leukaemia and a lung infection. Berlusconi, who is in a relationship with 33-year-old Forza Italia MP Marta Fascina, was taken to the hospital to undergo these assessments. He was previously discharged from the hospital last month after receiving treatment for a lung infection related to Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukaemia (CML), a rare blood cancer. Over the past few years, Berlusconi’s health has significantly declined, with a history of open-heart surgery in 2016 and multiple hospital admissions since contracting Covid-19 three years ago.

In April, Berlusconi was admitted to the intensive care unit of the San Raffaele hospital due to breathing difficulties. While being treated there, he was diagnosed with both a lung infection and CML. Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukaemia is a blood cancer characterized by an excess of monocytes in the blood and bone marrow. Monocytes are a type of white blood cell that doesn’t fully develop or function properly in individuals with CMML. These abnormal blood cells either remain in the bone marrow or are destroyed before entering the bloodstream.

This is not the first health battle Berlusconi has faced. He previously triumphed over prostate cancer, describing it as a nightmarish ordeal lasting several months. However, he deemed his battle with Covid-19 in 2020 as the most perilous challenge in his life. The three-time prime minister of Italy has had a tumultuous political career, marred by scandals such as his infamous “bunga bunga” parties. Throughout the years, he has faced various health issues, including fainting episodes leading to hospitalization in 2006 and subsequent heart surgery in the US in 2007. Berlusconi has also had major heart surgery in 2016 and has been using a pacemaker for several years. He was once again admitted to the hospital in January 2022 for a urinary tract infection.

Berlusconi, who won a Senate seat during the general elections in September, has recently courted controversy with his critical remarks about Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky, putting him at odds with Italian prime minister Giorgia Meloni. Berlusconi’s Forza Italia party is part of the ruling government coalition. Furthermore, he faced accusations of paying individuals, including young starlets, for silence and deception regarding his extravagant parties. However, he was acquitted of these charges earlier this year. This legal battle originated in 2010 when Berlusconi, who was serving as prime minister at the time, was accused of abusing his power to protect a Moroccan nightclub dancer named Karima El-Mahroug. In 2013, Berlusconi was temporarily banned from political office after a conviction for tax fraud, but he made a comeback and was re-elected as a senator last year. Currently, the media mogul is not actively involved in the government.
