The nominees for the 2023 Gotham Awards have been announced, and they include films like “Past Lives,” “A Thousand and One,” and “All of Us Strangers.” These films are up for awards such as Best Feature, Breakthrough Director, and Best Lead Performance. “Past Lives” directed by Celine Song and “A Thousand and One” directed by A.V. Rockwell are both nominated for these categories. Greta Lee is nominated for Best Lead Performance in “Past Lives,” while Teyana Taylor is nominated for the same category in “A Thousand and One.”
Other nominees for Best Feature include Ira Sachs’ “Passages,” Tina Satter’s “Reality,” and Kelly Reichardt’s “Showing Up.” “All of Us Strangers” has received the most nominations with four, including Best International Feature, Best Screenplay by writer-director Andrew Haigh, Best Lead Performance by Andrew Scott, and Best Supporting Performance by Claire Foy.
It’s worth noting that the Gotham Awards has recognized performers in gender-neutral categories since 2021. The nominations were announced live by Jeffrey Sharp and Kia Brooks, executives from the Gotham Film & Media Institute.
The awards ceremony will take place at Cipriani Wall Street in New York on November 27. The Gotham Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute for Social Justice will be awarded to Rustin, the Visionary Icon & Creator Tribute will go to Ben Affleck’s “Air,” and Bradley Cooper, star, director, and co-writer of “Maestro,” will receive the Cultural Icon & Creator Tribute.
However, it is uncertain how the ongoing actors strike will affect the Gotham Awards. If the strike is not resolved by the show date, actors from Netflix, NBCUniversal’s Focus Features, and Disney-owned Searchlight, including Bradley Cooper and the stars of “A Thousand and One” and “All of Us Strangers,” will not be able to promote their projects.
The Gotham Award nominees are selected by committees of film and TV critics, journalists, festival programmers, and film curators. The final award recipients will be determined by separate juries of writers, directors, actors, producers, editors, and others involved in film production.
Previous winners of the Gotham Awards include acclaimed films like “Nomadland,” “Marriage Story,” and “Birdman.” A complete list of this year’s nominees can be found below.
