2 nurses, doctor stabbed at Encino Hospital Medical Center; suspect detained – Orange County Register

A man who walked into the emergency room Friday afternoon at the Encino Hospital Medical Center stabbed two nurses and a doctor before barricading himself inside a room in the facility, police said. He was taken into custody hours later and sent to a hospital with self-inflicted wounds.

Update: Suspect in Encino hospital stabbing publicly identified, arrested

Officers were called to the medical center in the 16200 block of Ventura Boulevard around 4 p.m. after reports of the attacks, Officer Jeff Lee said.

The three victims were found near the facility’s emergency room and were taken to the Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center, where they were in stable condition, said Christina Zicklin, a spokesperson for the Northridge medical center. Earlier, the victims were reported in critical condition.

By early evening, the area surrounding the center was cordoned off while SWAT teams worked to detain the suspect, who was barricaded near the emergency room. The first floor of the hospital, and businesses adjacent to the center, were evacuated, according to Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton

The suspect, who has only been identified as a man in his 30’s, has had multiple run-ins with LAPD officers before, including battery on a police officer and resisting arrest, Hamilton said. Around 8 p.m., the man agreed with negotiation teams to exit the room and was detained by police.

He was taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds, Hamilton said.

Officials did not immediately offer information on a motive for Friday’s attack, but said that the suspected “presented” himself as a patient when he walked into the emergency room.

The medical center is a 150-bed community hospital staffed with 330 physicians and 420 professional support staff.

The stabbings come just days after another incident of violence at a medical facility. On Wednesday, a man with an AR-style rifle opened fire at a Tulsa medical office, killing four people, including three staff members.
