According to a UN refugee agency official, over 88,000 individuals have entered Armenia from Nagorno-Karabakh, and this number could potentially reach 120,000. This estimate corresponds to the entire population of the breakaway region that was recently recaptured by Azerbaijan.
Kavita Belani, the UNHCR representative in Armenia, addressed the situation in a UN press briefing, highlighting the large crowds of tired and frightened people gathering at registration centers.
“They have lived under nine months of blockade,” she stated. “When they arrive, they are filled with anxiety, fear, and a desire for answers.”
In response to a question about the number of refugees, Belani stated, “We are prepared to handle up to 120,000 people. However, it is difficult to predict the exact number at this point.” She mentioned that initial planning figures estimated between 70,000 and 90,000 refugees but acknowledged the need for updated numbers.
According to another UN official at the briefing, nearly one-third of the refugees are children. Regina De Dominicis, the UNICEF regional director, expressed concern about the separation of children from their families.
Hicham Diab, representative of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, emphasized the urgent need for mental health support for the refugees and described the distressing scenes of families arriving with severely weakened children.
